What is a dry socket?
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot in the socket breaks down and washes away. This leaves exposed socket bone, which can be painful. A dry socket typically occurs three to four days after the procedure and is identified by a sudden increase in pain. The exact cause is not known, so there are no specific instructions to avoid a dry socket. If pain occurs, please call our office at Associated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Phone Number (262) 253-6588 to schedule a visit.
What is the sharp area I feel after an extraction?
Occasionally there is a thin area of bone near the socket crest that may die and work its way out through the mucosa. This can be sharp to the tongue and painful. It is referred to as a bone spicule and occurs about one month after an extraction. Bone spicules occur in approximately 10% of lower molar extractions, and less often in other teeth. If a sharp area occurs, please call our office at Associated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Phone Number (262) 253-6588 to schedule a visit.
Why is there swelling on top of the gum after an extraction?
Less than 1% of patients may develop an infection in the extraction socket. This is evident by a soft bulge at the top of the extraction site often above the surrounding tissue. The swelling may be painful to touch with a small amount of bleeding or pus expressed. The area should be evaluated by our staff as soon as possible.
